Aderaw and Kipkoech win the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon 2023

The powerful group of African athletes proved that they can run very fast on the stunning course of the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon, which attracted 19,000 runners together with the ProFuturo Charity Race, which were held in parallel today in Madrid.

The winner in the men's category was the Kenyan Hyllary Kipkoech, who achieved a great time under the hour, clocking in 59:56, and was very close to his personal best. Kipkoech took the lead from kilometre 10 and increased his advantage over his pursuers, the Ethiopians athletes Tadese Takele Bikila and Tesema Mokenin Ashagre, second and third, respectively, less than a minute behind the Kenyan at the finish line. Javi Guerra was the first Spanish, sixth overall with a good result (1h02:42), closely followed by local athlete Yago Rojo (1h02:54), seventh.

In the women's category, Ethiopians athletes Zewditu Aderaw Gelaw and Alemitu Tariku Olana fought a beautiful duel running together almost all the 21,097 metres of the course. Aderaw won thanks to a powerful change to cross the finish line first in 1h07:38, while her compatriot Alemitu Tariku had to settle for second place just 11 seconds behind her. The podium was completed by Ayinadis Teshome Birle in 1h09:02. The first European finisher was France's Marie Bouchard followed by the first Spaniard, Clara Simal from Madrid, who finished ninth overall, improving her personal best, in 1h13:38. Azucena Díaz closed the women's top-10 in 1h16:53.

The ProFuturo Race, which was held in parallel to the half marathon, was a great sporting and solidarity festival over 5.8 kilometres with 2,000 participants. The winner was Cristina Polanco in 21:53, and to the Moroccan Olympic athlete Hicham Sigueni took the triumph in the male category (17:16). The ProFuturo Race, one of the most popular and solidarity races in the calendar, has raised more than 19,000 €, which will be donated to the digital education programme with which Fundación Telefónica and Fundación "la Caixa" contribute to close the educational gap in isolated environments and at risk of exclusion in 45 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. Abel Anton, Chema Martínez and triathlete Javier Gómez Noya took part today in the ProFuturo Race and crossed the finish line together. Paralympic athlete Lorenzo Albaladejo, considered the best athlete with cerebral palsy in the history of Spain in sprint events, also completed the race.

The authentic half marathon of Madrid has a fast course, but it is also particularly attractive and of tourist interest for the runners, who value it very positively: Paseo de La Castellana, the Bernabéu, Plaza de Castilla, Calle Serrano, Puerta de Alcalá, Atocha, Paseo del Prado (declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco), Neptuno, Cibeles or Colón.

The Movistar Madrid Half Marathon continues to maintain the "Road Race Label" of the international federation World Athletics, and was awarded by the Madrid City Council as an "event of general interest for the city", as it is one of the most emblematic and traditional races in the country. It will celebrate its 22nd edition on 26 March (and the seventh edition of the ProFuturo Race). On the renovated course, the race's all-time records have been broken, with Ronald Kiprotich clocking 59:38 in 2021 and Winfridah Moraa clocking 1h07:22 in 2022.

The race is organised by Agrupación Deportiva Marathon, Atresmedia and Sport Life Ibérica, with the main sponsorship of Movistar and with the institutional support of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid and the Comunidad de Madrid. Joma Sport is the technical sponsor and AhorraMás, Rafaelhoteles, Alquiber, Deloitte, Gourmet Latino, Physiorelax, Science in Sports SiS, Garmin, Olympia Quironsalud and Breathe Right are collaborating.
