The Movistar Madrid Medio Maraton 2024 redesigns its course to make it even faster and more monumental

The Movistar Madrid Medio Maraton 2024 redesigns its course to make it even faster and more monumental

On 7 April, the Movistar Madrid Medio Maraton will present a new course that is even faster than the previous one, in which up to 8 athletes have already managed to run under an hour over its 21,097 metres, and even more spectacular and monumental so that the approximately 20,000 participants will be able to enjoy the authentic Madrid half marathon even more.

The Movistar Madrid Half Marathon has shown in its last editions that it is possible to run very fast in the Spanish capital despite its special profile, with the achievement of some great results, such as the records of the race held by Kenyans Ronald Kiprotich with 59:38 in 2021, and Winfridah Moraa with 1h07:22 in 2022. But this redesign, which maintains the start on the Paseo de la Castellana and the finish line on the Paseo de Recoletos, in front of the Plaza del Descubrimiento (Colon), will favour a course that is more suitable for maintaining a solid pace throughout the kilometres. There is less difference between the highest and the lowest point of the course and, therefore, less difference in altitude. In addition, the last kilometres will be very favourable with gentle downhill slopes and crossing the most touristic and world-famous part of Madrid.

The spectacular start of the race will once again be located on Paseo de la Castellana, near the junction with Zurbarán. The runners will take the Castellana until beyond kilometre five to take Bravo Murillo after passing through Plaza Castilla. Afterwards, the race will continue along Raimundo Fernández Villaverde, Joaquín Costa and Doctor Esquerdo streets until reaching O'Donnell street to border the mythical Puerta de Alcalá, continue along Serrano and cross the Salamanca neighbourhood until Sagasta street and enter Malasaña through San Bernardo. At that point, the Movistar Madrid Medio Maraton will run along Gran Vía after the descent through Callao, and the 20th kilometre will be located near the Telefónica Building, which will be a very special place for the race and will serve as a celebration of Telefónica's Centenary, which takes place in 2024. Precisely, the Telefónica Building, one of the first skyscrapers built in Europe, is the icon that appears on the medal that all finishers will receive when crossing the finish line.

After passing through Gran Vía, the race faces its final metres under the impressive figure of Cibeles and the finish line will be in the middle of Paseo de Recoletos, very close to Calle de Alcalá. This new route, in addition to reducing the positive difference in elevation and which will help to achieve better results for both elite and popular runners, is even more central and monumental than the previous one.

Another important aspect that has been worked on is that of increasing the animation spots, which serves as an incentive for the participants themselves at many key points along the route and which also helps to attract the public to the race, as well as the runner services. In total, there will be up to four refreshment points along the 21,097 metre route (at kilometres 6, 11, 14 and 18.7) and another special one at the post finish line, and there will be DJ's, batucadas and musical groups in six different locations.
